I purchased this jade fish in March 2021 at the Yunzhou antique market in Xuhui District, Shanghai.

The ground stall is a representative form of the antique market in China and does not usually sell high-priced antiques or artefacts like antique stores. At that time I met a vendor who had a pack of jade fish with very antique craftsmanship, so I purchased two for a total cost of 50 RMB. Based on what I had learned in my ancient jade appreciation course at Tongji University, and bringing the actual pieces to my course instructor (Prof. Sun Changchu) for verification, I was basically sure they were authentic. Unfortunately, I didn’t take photos to document the purchase that day, but in the virtual reality course, based on oblique photography technology I have since taken over 300 photos with my DSLR camera and created a model of the jade fish through ContextCapture, which can be viewed and studied in a digital scene.
